Guy's Heads
My wife's grandpa "Guy" was owner of Johnson Bros. Farm Implement company in Clarkfield Minnesota. When he was not busy he liked to whittle on old packing materials, sticks and lawn mower rollers. He liked to make little heads and he liked to give them away. Last summer we collected as many heads as we could and tried to document the heads with a series of portraits of the carvings. Tonight as part of Art A Whirl the studio will be open to view a collection of portraits of "Guy's Heads"

Excelsior Brewing
I got to visit the Excelsior brewery today. I had not been there since they expanded, WOW!
My phone died before I could snap any more photos, (what kind of photographer uses a phone?).
Get out there and try their beer.

watch,
then turn off the device and go talk to some one. You can still do both but not at the same time. Value the people you are with more than the device.

Mice
Found these prints in a drawer, some of my earliest digital product shots. Anybody still have one of these in use? I was also just learning about "invert" too much fun.

New Hall Light
My building is in the process of renovating my hallway, I now have a sliver of nice raw morning sunlight that comes in my entryway, very nice not to be in the dark any more.

September
Labor Day weekend is always bitter sweet for me. It signals the end of the summer and the beginning of something new and unknown. September is my favorite month, I long ago gave up the back to school blues and started to embrace new stuff. My son was born on a beautiful September day. There are lots of beautiful days in September and the nights are cool and great for sleeping.
This photo from the state fair says "September"!

Backlinks
I've been working with Holly Jo Anderson the owner of Veritas Marketing on getting some better use out of my marketing. She has a blog on her web site http://www.veritasmarketing.com/ and one of the recent updates talks about "Backlinks". Great information for me and well here you go!

Henri Cartier-Bresson interview and influences.
One of my Mom's best friends was a darkroom worker for Henri Cartier-Bresson while they were living in Paris in the early 50s. As a child I did not understand what that meant. Since then I have become a huge fan. This article about some lost interviews give great insight to the man.

Great little read with several "nuggets" about life and siezing the moment. One interesting thing is a mention of Martin Munkacsi, a photographer that influenced Bresson. A quick search reveals Munkacsi influenced all of us, wow. Look at what Munkacsi started.

Inspirational
I went to the ASMP MN meeting last night. The evening was called "Finding you balance" with Ackerman and Gruber http://ackermangruber.com/. They were giving a talk about their work. These guys are on a streak as their style seems to match well with a popular current aesthetic. There work is so different from what I do I was not sure what I would get from the talk. I was happy to hear several "nuggets" of "wisdom", a little hard to accept ( put the ego away) from such young talent but it is right on.
Nuggets from Ackerman and Gruber,
1) Personal work, do it!
2) Write it down, makes you commit and makes it real.
3) Do the hard work. Work hard.
4) Contests, enter.
5) Get a better email campaign system. (this is just for me)
6) Once well into personal project (at least 50%) then apply for grants and fellowships.
7) Shoot what you love.
8) Adjectives rather than nouns.
9)Thanks you notes.

Danes go Swedish
I took my parents to the American Swedish Institue last week and we had a lovely time. http://www.asimn. The current exhibit of woven tapestries done from photography is excellent.
If you have never been there it is worth a visit, they have some fantastic food in/at their "Fika". You might have read about it in the New York Times article about Minnesota and the New Nordic Cuisine.

Great local food!
I'll tell where this came from but you have to email me for the answer, I'm afraid to share this information as the place will become wildly popular and you know what happens then.

New visions for Town and Country.
Here is a link to an interview with Town and Country Design Director Edward Leida. I love the suggestions for a more real vision, celebrating the found beauty. Also some intersting comments on the use of type.

Sometimes just finding the props is the hardest part. Then I get to shoot it and make art out of it.

2011 J 22 World Championship New Orleans
I had high hopes for the team at the regatta. Unfortunately the wind gods did not. We sailed pretty well considering we had not sailed together much in the last year or two. We were sitting in 9th (out of 65) going into the last day when the wheels fell off. No when the wheels exploded. In one day of sailing we went back to 20th. We had one race where we ended 56th. People I had never seen on the race course were sailing right by us like we were standing still. Still hurts

Laser Masters World Championship.
Hi I just got back from the World Championships for Laser Masters. I'm now officially a Grand Master. As the new kid in the group I was anxious to test my skills with the worlds best in San Francisco Bay. Wow! what a place to sail, gnarly breeze, ripping currents and great competitors from all over the world. I had my moments, here is a link to a shot of me leading a race at the Worlds.

I'll see if the photographer will let me use the image in the blog but here is the link for now.

US Men's Singlehanded Championship.
For those who don't know me when I'm not working I like to race sailboats. Here is a shot of me by Jan Anderson racing at the Gorge in Oregon at the US Men's Singlehanded Championship a few weeks ago.
